Virtuosity and ravishing playing without the slightest doubt.” The organ of Uppsala Cathedral was built in 1871 by the Swedish organ builder Per Larsson Åkerman, shortly after his studies in Paris with the famous Cavaillé-Coll. This magnificent instrument is the largest and best preserved Åkerman organ in the world. Andrew Canning was born in London in 1967 and studied organ with David Sanger and Christopher Bowers-Broadbent at The Royal Academy of Music. In 1984 he won First Prize at The West of England Organ Festival Competition and in 1991 he was awarded The Worshipful Company of Musicians´ Silver Medal. Following appointments at Westminster Abbey and St. Marylebone Parish Church in London, he moved to Sweden in 1991. Andrew is currently assistant organist at Uppsala Cathedral and director of its famous choir of boys and men, Uppsala Domkyrkas Gosskör. As an organ soloist he has broadcast many times on Swedish and Finnish radio, and has performed all over Europe and Japan. When, in 1943, Gunno Södersten began service as organist and choral director of the Immanuel Church in Stockholm this was the beginning of an unparalleled contribution to the musical life of the free churches in Sweden. For 46 years both as performer and composer - in the tradition of Bach one might claim - he served as a warmhearted and sympathetic interpreter of the gospel. He worked in many different styles, frequently expressing himself dramatically. Often a particular moment in a church service would inspire his creative gifts. In this way his music for use in church preserved a fundamental sense of simple spiritual ballads, strict chorales and advanced artistry side by side in a constant striving to integrate the service music into the inner processes. Gunno Södersten had no use for church music in the form of concert pieces or as interludes between spoken episodes in church. |

by Zoltán Gárdonyi (1906 – 1986) and Zsolt Gárdonyi (*1946) Release date April 27th 2000 “The idea of making this CD arose from a successful concert showcasing Gárdonyi choral and organ works in the Uppsala Cathedral in October 1999. At this memorable event Zsolt Gárdonyi performed his own and his father Zoltán Gárdonyi´s works in a joint production with the singers of the Collegium Cantorum under the direction of Lars Angerdal. This recording celebrates the symbiotically united music of two generations of composers in harmonious collaboration with its interpreters in a multi-faceted composer portrait. It documents as well a piece of living twentieth-century European church music, making it more accessible to a wider audience on the threshold of a new millennium.“ ZSOLT GÁRDONYI son of the distinguished Zoltán Gárdonyi, was born March 21, 1946, in Budapest, Hungary. Subsequent to an outstanding musical education in his native city, as well as in various other music centers of Europe, Zsolt Gárdonyi has been living in Germany since 1968. After receiving the Bavarian State Competitive Award for Young Composers 1979, he gained international recognition as a composer and concert organist. He has been Professor of Music Theory at the State Conservatory in Würzburg, Bavaria since 1980. His wide-ranging activity as a composer and music theorist are evidenced by extensive publications of compositions and articles as well as by numerous guest lectures, workshops, and master courses given in various conservatories and universities of Europe and America.“
COLLEGIUM CANTORUM is the chamber choir of Uppsala Cathedral. Founded in 1983 by Lars Angerdal, this carefully selected forty-member choir, which sings in three languages on this CD, has established an international reputation over the years through its many concert tours and broadcasts throughout Europe. It is renown for premiering works of numerous leading Swedish composers. |
